Illusion is one of the last few MacGregor 65s, built in Costa Mesa, California in 1995 by MacGregor Sailboats. Doug took delivery in San Francisco and prepared her for cruising over a two year period. She’s a fast, comfortable cruising boat, measuring 65 feet (~20m) long and 12 feet (~3.6m) wide at the widest. She has a Mercruiser 150hp diesel engine, reverse-mounted behind the cockpit, just aft of the wheel. The hull speed is about 10 knots, but we regularly exceed that surfing waves downwind – our top cruising speed was 19.2 knots leaving San Francisco! A more normal surfing speed for our previous cruises was ~12-15 knots. The sales page for Anthem (built from the same molds, but extended to be 70 feet long and a second mast added) has similar performance details to Illusion.
